Druxy’s Smoked Salmon Sandwich

On Saturday I found myself in the sad place known as the Eaton Centre’s food court. While my husband wanted Harvey’s, I didn’t feel like fast food so I decided to give Druxy’s a try.

My original plan was to make-my-own smoked salmon sandwich. However, as I was rather rudely informed by a Druxy’s employee, I couldn’t do that.  The smoked salmon only comes in one form, though thankfully I could get it without onions and did have the option to get it toasted.

Wendy's Fries

Tonight Shawn came home with Wendy’s. Now, I love Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich and of course its Frosty drinks but I’ve never been a big fan of the fries.

That all changed today.

As usual, I started by having a couple of fries before I unwrapped my sandwich but unlike usual these fries were good. No, they were better than good, they were amazing.

They were crispy and salty and not too-potato-y and really, just the best fast food fries I had ever had.

Halfway through devouring the contents of my fry container, I remember that I had recently read something about Wendy’s recently changing its fry formula.

According to this Globe and Mail article, Wendy’s “boasts it’s the first national chain to serve fries with the skin on and seasoned with sea salt.”

So that’s why these things are so yummy, they’re made with sea salt and with the skin on.

Usually I can only eat about half a container of fast food fries but I had no problems inhaling a whole container this time as well as even eating some of Shawn’s. And that was all before I even touched my sandwich.

The downside to all this tastiness is that the new version of the fries do contain more salt (500 milligrams per medium serving compared with 350 before). So I guess it’s a good thing that I only get Wendy’s every now and then when Shawn picks it up.

Vinny Massimo’s Pizza & Pasta

Last night I tried a slice of pizza from Vinny Massimo’s Pizza & Pasta on Queen. St. W. for the first time.

Now, before I go any further, I should be up front about two things:
  1.  What I really wanted to eat last night was poutine from Poutini’s but the line-up was so long that we decided to go with pizza instead.
  2.  It was Nuit Blanche and Queen St., as well as Massimo’s, was crazy busy and while the restaurant appeared to be sufficiently staffed, maybe the crowds were keeping it from being on it’s A game.

Deep-fried Butter

I just got back from the CNE where I did it: I ate the deep-fried butter and yes, I totally recommend that you do the same (unless you’re some weird person who hates butter and/or deep-fried items).

For $5, you’ll get four smallish dough balls, each drizzled with chocolate, vanilla, caramel or cherry sauce and all sprinkled with icing powder. The sugar and the sauces are a nice touch but the main show is inside the dough ball: Warm, liquidy, melted butter.

The whole thing reminded me of one of those liquor-filled chocolates; but with butter instead of booze and dough instead of chocolate.

There’s actually not as much butter in each ball as you would think but I guess that’s why you get four of them. By the time you finish the last one, you might think you could handle another one but I wouldn’t recommend buying a second batch. While these things are quite tasty, I can see how they could be the perfect example of too much of a good thing.

Wendy's Spicy Chicken Caeser

So this isn’t a food blog, it’s a blog about the crap I buy, but since sometimes I buy food, it’s up for review just like everything else.

Today for lunch I decided to try one of Wendy’s new Garden Sensations Salads. I went with the Spicy Chicken Caesar since I do enjoy Wendy’s Spicy Chicken sandwich and I thought the salad would be a healthier option.

Now, stop your eye-rolling at that last statement because you know what, the salad did have fewer calories than the sandwich, mostly because I didn’t eat most of it. Yes, it was that bad.

The chicken part was quite yummy though considering the size of this salad, there could have been more (but then when couldn’t there be more spicy chicken?). I did go through and eat all of that along with the croutons that were nice and crunchy.  But the rest of the bland, pointless salad went in the trash.

Thank god I also ordered a Frosty.

Would I buy this again: Hell no.
